Brighton Hill Community College
"Dance was an area identified as requiring support & development in schools throughout Basingstoke & Deane from an audit conducted by the Boroughs Sports College. As Director of Sport I felt it was important to employ high quality staff in this discipline to produce schemes of work coupled with resources and a professional development package to drive standards of school dance to new levels of competence. Karen was part of a versatile team of performers and teachers, who contributed to both the Sports College and School Sports Partnership consortium of schools’ dance programmes. The contribution Karen made from Key Stage 2, through to Key Stage 4- GCSE dance, assisted in ensuring the quality of choreography and performance in the annual Dance festivals improved year on year, as did the GCSE results.
Karen was a target driven employee, who was able to work with a high degree of autonomy, across educational phases; adapting the delivery of Dance programmes to the level of the participants, yet challenging them to reach new levels of performance, and thus ensuring observable progression.
One of the largest contributions Karen made to Dance in the area was to develop schemes of work for school teachers who were not competent practitioners themselves, yet through training & support developed their confidence to independently deliver a Dance programme in their school which fulfilled National Curriculum requirements, but also provided young people with a platform to enjoy dancing whilst improving their personal motor coordination."
